In the 1980s and 1990s, game cracking was a vibrant underground subculture primarily focused on removing copy protection from video games and distributing pirated versions. This practice involved skilled programmers known as âcrackersâ who would systematically disable copy protection mechanisms, allowing games to be freely copied and shared. Usually, the crackers would add an additional intro as a way of signing the cracked version. These were called demos and were fundational for the Demoscene.
