Liturgy for Electronic Waste
Performative lecture at the 8th Inter-Format Symposium on Rites and Terrabytes in the form of a liturgy.
This liturgy was a performative lecture and an attempt to rethink ourselves in animistic relation to electronic waste through an honest confrontation with my own Catholic-Protestant formation. I want to make an inquiry into new animism, championed by Nurit Bird-David, through my own non-animistic cultural lenses. Partially a very personal piece, I will tell how e-waste touched and shaped me and will transpose my relationality to you through the liturgy. This oral storytelling is accompanied by a ritualized recycling of electronic waste. As a contrast, the lecture part will focus on our attempt to give form to this hyperobject. Through various attempts at quasi-animistic methodologies, we tried to create access to electronic waste in our art research project Times of Waste.

The electronic waste was also issuing a call, a call that I could answer through my own materiality.

Performativer Vortrag auf dem 8. Interformat-Symposium ĂĽber Rites and Terrabytes in Form einer Liturgie.
Die Liturgie war ein performativer Vortrag und ein Versuch, sich im animistischen Verhältnis zum Elektronikschrott neu zu denken, durch eine ehrliche Konfrontation mit meiner eigenen katholisch-evangelischen Lebens-Geschichte. Ich wollte eine Untersuchung über den neuen Animismus mit Hilfe meiner eigenen nicht-animistischen Kulturlinsen durchführen.
Das doch sehr persönliche Stück erzählt, wie Elektronikschrott mich berührt und geformt hat. Durch die Liturgie wollte ich diese Beziehung auf die Zuhörer*innen übertragen. Diese orale Geschichtenerzählung wurde von einem ritualisierten Recycling von Elektronikschrott begleitet. In der zweiten Hälfte des Stückes, hatte sich der Vortragsteil auf den Versuch konzentriert, dem Hyperobjekt Elektroschrott Form zu geben.
Durch verschiedene Versuche quasi-animistischer Methoden haben wir in unserem Kunstforschungsprojekt Times of Waste versucht, Zugang zu Elektronikschrott zu schaffen.
